IS YOUR HORSE reaching His Ultimate POTENTIAL?

STRATEGIC MUSCLE THERAPY IS DESIGNED & DEDICATED TO HELP!

EQUINE THERAPY

The horse is not only a noble creature, but also a born athlete. He has over 700 skeletal muscles strategically designed to carry his 1,500 lbs body & often, our bodies as well. We, at Strategic Muscle Therapy, perform muscle stimulation by targeting problem areas to facilitate freedom of movement in the horse. Thus, eliminating tie-ups, increasing & developing a better stride, stimulating blood flow, improving cognitive functioning, and overall health of the horse & rider (see Human Section).

As the horse can not use our mode of language to communicate, it is our duty to hear him through touch & feel. In the horse-human partnership, it is paramount that both individuals are at their best, so if the horse isn’t feeling 110%, he can’t give 110%. Muscle Therapy will allow the horse to give his optimal performance in training, riding, and competion.

Why & How…

Colic

IMG_3838.JPG

In most colic cases, the preciptating culprits are stress, ulcers, poor sugary diet, gas build-up, an impaction, or a parasite infestation. Most all horses are suseptible to these risks in modern environments with extended stalling, ridden work & frequent travelling.

A Lymphatic Drainage Therapy session can help restore the horse's ability to fight infection & improve lung functioning by encouraging movement through lymph fluids around the body. LDT helps remove waste & toxins from the bodily tissues. This is especially important after a colic as the horse was under extreme duress which produces those toxins & stress hormones. Stress-reduction & improved functioning through LDT may also aid in colic prevention.

Kissing Spine

The-vertebral-column-of-the-horse.png

Kissing spine occurs when two or more of the spinous processes sticking up from each spinal vertebra, aka the flanges, are positioned so that they touch or rub against one another. Horses with kissing spine often develop back pain, bone cysts, arthritis, hock issues, & other discomforts throughout the body. They can also experience fusing of these spinous processes.

The spine is designed to not only protect the residing nerve roots, but also to provide structural stability & enable flexible motion. In the case of kissing spine, this design is marred & its ability to protect/funtion is inhibited.

All the more reason for muscle therapy! Muscle therapy provides Fascial Release, allows muscles to move freely again & permits oxygen to move throughout the body. Most importantly, these aids enable the horse to move toward becoming pain-free.

The most important treatment for a horse with kissing spine is exercise & building a proper topline. Often, the cause of KS is that the horse has been using himself improperly. Inverted carriage causes the spine to bend & draw the spinous processes closer together. Long lasting exposure from continued improper carriage perpetuates this issue, but other causes include genetic conformation & trauma such as early starting/breaking.

The solution is to teach the horse to travel with an engaged core & hind-end thus lifting his back & separating those processes. The common impeding issues include:

  • Habitual way the body remembers how to carry itself

  • Pain from the overriding processes

  • Soreness & tightness from improper carriage/compensation

Muscle Therapy works to ease all of those issues by changing the way the body perceives itself neurologically & by alleviating the soreness/tightness/pain that may prevent a speedy & successful rehabilitation.

How can we improve Performance?

Pre—event

Therapy CAN…

  • Decrease risk of competition injury.

  • Increase blood circulation to the muscles. This allows for musclar flushing & oxygenation.

  • Create a state of readiness in the muscles & tissues.

  • Help muscles relax so the joints move through their full range of motion.

  • Enable the athlete to focus on their event — instead of their pain — through relaxation & completing neurological preparations.

post—event

Therapy CAN…

  • Help flush out toxins from exercise.

  • Help return the muscles to a state of relaxation.

  • Reduce the risk/intensity of next-day muscle soreness.

  • Reduce swelling.

  • Promote faster healing/recovery.

  • Facilitate cool-down routine. Especially good after events when the athlete either too tired/excited to cool down properly.

  • Decrease risk of post-competition injury.

Both Can…

  • Unlock the body’s full potential

  • Save you money through short-term investment for long-term gain! Cut out those vet bills!

Pre-Event Therapy work is beneficial for those who may be performing in any sporting event. This type of therapy allows oxygen to move freely throughout the body which enables muscles to experience maximum potential as well as aid in muscle exhaustion & injury prevention.

Post-Event Therapy is beneficial in helping the muscles recover from exertion after competition. This type of therapy helps facilitate recovery by alleviating acidic build up, as well as the tightening of the fascia and/or any soreness developed during perfomance.

So How do we treat these common problems?
